GovBeat: The California legislatures approval is more than four times that of Congress
The California state legislatures approval rating is now more than four times that of its federal counterpart. Forty percent of California voters approved of the state legislature in an early December survey, the highest such rating since mid-2007, according to the nonpartisan Field Research Corporation. The last time approval remained that high for a year was 2002 when the average annual approval was 40 percent. The turnaround in approval, which was as low as 10 percent in September 2010, mirrors a similar trend in the states finances. Read full article >>

Mandela, master of the small gesture
During the two years I spent in South Africa during the mid-1980s, when the government declared two separate states of emergency, Nelson Mandela was in Pollsmoor Prison. The Fix: Cochrans decision sets stage for intense GOP primary against tea party candidate
The Mississippi Senate race just went from looking like a potential free-for-all to firming up as an intense one-on-one battle between the tea party wing of the GOP and its establishment. Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) is set to announce that he will seek a seventh term in office. The decision came after months of speculation that Cochran might retire speculation fueled in part by the senator's own actions. He raised little money and delayed his announcement about the future until almost the end of the year, after most of his Senate colleagues had declared their intentions for 2014. Read full article >>

On Faith: Nelson Mandela and the spiritual legacy of divestment
Nelson Mandela, anti-apartheid activist, former prisoner and President of South Africa, an icon of non-violent resistance, has died. While many aspects of Mandelas legacy are enormously important, one is particularly spiritually crucial because it shows how systemic evil can be countered by systemic good. That can be seen in the work of divestment, the ultimately huge economic boycott of South Africa that was singularly important in helping to bring an end to apartheid. Read full article >>

Monkey Cage: Why Thai protests are unlikely to yield electoral success
Joshua Tucker: The following is a guest post from political scientists Allen Hicken (University of Michigan) and Joel Selway (Brigham Young University) ***** Thailand is currently engaged in another round of political brinksmanship. The instigators of the recent unrest are the latest incarnation of the anti-Thaksin movement that has been a constant feature of Thai politics since 2005. Often dressed in yellow shirts, the protesters, upset at the governments attempts to pass a political amnesty bill, are demanding that the current government led by Yingluck Shinawatra, Thaksin Shinawatras sister, resign. The supporters of the current government (the Red Shirts) are have also taken to the streets in response. Read full article >>

Yes, there remain enormous banks with multitrillion-dollar balance sheets and operations in all corners of the financial world. But, Lew said in a speech Thursday, the reforms implemented through the Dodd-Frank Act are making it pretty much unthinkable that one of these institutions could fail in a way that brings on a government bailout or leads to a catastrophic economic downturn.
